Rann says DPP was consulted over McGee probe. 07/05/2005. ABC News Online
South Australian Premier Mike Rann says the State’s new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Stephen Pallaras, was consulted over the Government’s royal commission into the McGee case. The Kapunda Road royal commission will look at the way the office of the DPP handled the case, as well as the police investigation into the hit-and-run incident that killed cyclist Ian Humpheys.

Mr Pallaras says he should have been consulted but the Premier says he was. “I think that Steven needs to check back on his file notes and I think that you’ll find that the whole matter of an inquiry by a judge was discussed with him,” Mr Rann said.Mr Pallaras has been scathing of what he has termed “ignorant, political comment” about the Department’s recent work.

But Mr Rann says there is broad support for the Government’s actions. “Our decision to have an inquiry into the aspects of the Eugene McGee case has been welcomed by the Law Society of South Australia, supported by the Opposition and people like [Independent member] Nick Xenophon ,” he said. “So when you’ve got the Law Society, the Liberals, Labor and Nick Xenophon agreeing on something - we must be doing something right.”
