Messages from Melbourne’s Wheels Of Justice
Posted by admin on 05/12/05 in Campaigns & Initiatives, Wheels of Justice News
I’ve finally typed up the messages from Saturday. As the ride was hastily organised only last week, we didn’t deliver the messages to Parliament. Instead we collected the bidons, and are keeping them safe until we plan further actions. If you bought along a bidon, and then collected it, please contact us and we’ll place the message here.
Now, a few ideas. Would people be interested in organising further rides and activities? Like local bikes shops and cycling clubs collecting bidons with messages, helping to develop a statement of intent for Melb WOJ, planning a comprehensive media strategy, and then presenting the bidons in a blaze of publicity to relevant ministers & Parliament?
Another possible idea, after presenting the bidons to Parliament; would be to create an installation in a public space or gallery as a focus for our aims & objections. What do you think? Please contact us & also let everyone you know in Melbourne’s diverse cycling community. Last Saturday morning was only the beginning; it’s now up to you. Email: melbicyclejustice@gmail.com with your feedback & ideas.

Fair Go On The Road – Fair Go In The Courts
Justice for Cyclists – Justice for all Road Users
How does a nominal fine and 12 month loss of license compensate for the tragic loss of a husband, father, friend? He was left on the side of the road to die by someone who admits having consumed 5 glasses of red wine. What sort of deterrent is that to others who may indulge in this behavior? We want equal justice for ALL road users. Bec Morton
Laminated note on Adura bidon -11 Nov 03 A DRIVER who killed a cyclist while sending a text message walked from court yesterday with a two-year suspended prison sentence. Silvia Nicole Ciach, of Curlewis near Geelong, pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing the death of Anthony John Marsh, 36 on December 30, 2001. County Court Judge Susan Chen said the fact that Mr Marsh’s parents did not want Ciach to be jailed was a factor in her sentence being suspended. But the case – the of its kind in Victoria – was a stark warning to drivers about the risks of using mobile phones while driving, she said. (This bidon also included two pictures: Silvia Nicole Ciach, and “Killed: Anthony Marsh, holding his niece, was killed when his bike was hot by a car”)
This Adura bidon also included a message inside: JUSTICE – YOU TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS. There is no justice when a family looses a loved one and there are no ramifications BUT there should be and you can make it happen.

Nobody should die on our roads, but even worst is letting individuals walk away from their actions – please put yourselves in the place of these families and act for the good of the community that you are paid to represent. Our planet needs more cyclists as does our great country. Lets show that we care about them and make all motorists and cyclists understand that it is a privilege and not a right to take a vehicle onto our public roads. Rest in peace, all those we have lost. Jason.
Hit and run – Increase penalties
Educate drivers to share the road – Wheels of Justice. A cyclists life, is it only worth $3100 + 12mth suspension?
Educate Drivers to share the road – Wheels of Justice. Cyclists are not expendable.
This is unacceptable and reeks of a Police cover-up!
Bausch&Lomb blue bidon – message inside: State Parliament, Dear Mr Steve Bracks, There needs to be a shared respect between cyclists and motorists, but how are motorists supposed to respect cyclists when they see someone getting off with just a fine for killing a cyclist. The increase of cyclists means we need more cycling infrastructure and this equates to less cars on the road, which can only mean a better environment to live in. Please ensure all road users rights are protected and observed in the future. Warm regards, Nicholas Wainwright, Highett

Wheels for Justice – Kerb Bad Driving Habits – Letter taped to bottle from Susan and Phil McDonald of AllTrails
“Message for “Wheels for Justice” To whom we have placed own trust. Bicycle riders are precious and are sometimes Government Ministers, mothers, fathers or even your children. We need respect on the road, because we are living life, keeping ourselves healthy and reducing pollution. All the things Governments want the public to do. In France, if a motorist injures a cyclist it is the motorist’s fault, no matter who was in the wrong. This results in vehicles being incredibly courteous to all cyclists, therefore allowing more cyclists to have confidence to get on their bike and ride. Let’s be sensible and respect the cyclist. Punish the few who do not “kerb” their bad driving habits and allow cyclists confidence and freedom to cycle on public roads, signed by Susan and Phil McDonald of AllTrails
