Kapunda Road Royal Commission
Many of us have been attempting to keep awareness of the McGee case going outside South Australia. I don’t need to remind any of you that the issues raised are of national importance to all cyclists and road users.
On this Bicycle Justice blog, Resources & Skills have been added in the righthand column for letter writing hints, media and advocacy links.
Wheels of Justice Adelaides aims & objectives:
We are a group of ordinary people who happen to enjoy riding bicycles, who have had enough and want to see some changes. Our three aims are:
:: Education :: We want to see drivers educated to understand that cyclists have a right to be on the road, and that they have a duty of care towards us.
:: Enforcement :: We want to see the existing traffic laws properly enforced to protect the safety of all road users, and full penalties applied.
:: Accountability :: We want all road users to be held accountable for their own actions, and the systems to be in place to ensure that happens!
***********
Unfortunately the limited KRRC Terms of Reference, combined with McGee’s actions, may be seen to serve to reinforce negative connotations that cyclists are solely to blame in any altercation, that the act of cycling on the roads is somehow both an excuse and incitement to injury or murder another human being. Refer to BISA’s Media Release: South Australian Government Failing Cyclists on Road Safety (May 2nd 2005)
This dangerous attitude should not be reinforced. This dangerous attitude has to change. Not only to bring justice for Ian Humphreys family and friends, but for all of us.
