Cyclist killed in ute collision – June 26, 2006
A cyclist in her 40s died when struck from behind by a four-wheel drive utility north of Hobart yesterday. The woman, 42, from Dynnyrne, was knocked from her bicycle on the East Derwent Highway at Old Beach shortly before 2.30pm (AEST) yesterday, police said.

“The cyclist was heading north on East Derwent Highway. When she was between the two Jetty Road intersections she was struck from behind by a white 1982 Landcruiser flat tray, which had a black bullbar,” a police spokesman said. “The deceased was given medical attention at the scene but died whilst being transported to the hospital.” Police are not sure how the collision occurred.

The driver of the utility, 63, of Bagdad, was not injured. Police are investigating. No names have been released.The fatality took Tasmania’s road toll to 29, seven more than at the same time last year

    Her death is indeed a very painful loss to all who love cycling. I grew up in Hobart and have many happy memories of the Old Beach area. To know Kate died doing something she loved is tragic beyond words.
