Team-mates honour Gillett one year on

ABC: Team-mates honour Gillett one year on - 18 July, 2006

Amy Gillett’s former team-mates have paid emotional tributes to the cyclist one year after she lost her life in a road accident in Germany. Gillett was killed when a car hit a group of Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) riders training near Leipzig. Five other cyclists were injured in the accident. Family and friends gathered for a roadside memorial in Germany overnight. Cyclist Kate Nicholls said visiting the accident site was important to her healing process.

“I really wanted to come here to remember Amy and pay my respects. But I also want to come here and create some new memories and some good times, and racing is one of the best times so I am really looking forward to that,” she said. Tasmanian cyclist Louise Yaxley was overcome by emotion, breaking down at a media conference before the memorial service. “Being here is the most important issue … for the memorial for Amy, and just coming back here is important too,” she said before breaking down.
