ABC Regional: Hit-run death laws toughened

ABC Regional: Hit-run death laws toughened - 30 July, 2006

New laws come into effect today in South Australia that could see motorists jailed for life if they kill or seriously injure someone while driving. Before today, people who failed to stop at an accident after killing someone faced a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

The tougher penalties for aggravated driving offences were drafted in response to a recommendation from the Kapunda Royal Commission, which dealt with the Eugene McGee case. From today, people who injure or kill someone in an accident will also have to report to police within 90 minutes and can also be breath-tested up to eight hours after the crash.
