Melb: More charges possible over pedestrian death

The Australian: More charges possible over pedestrian death - 29 August, 2006

Police may lay further charges over the death of an elderly man who was fatally struck by a cyclist in Melbourne. James Gould, 77, died in hospital after he was hit while trying to cross Beach Road, in Melbourne’s south-east about 8.30am (AEST) Saturday. The accident occurred during the notorious “Hell Ride”, an unsanctioned weekly race where up to 200 cyclists ride along Beach Road and Nepean Highway at speeds of up to 60kph.

A 30-year-old St Kilda man is expected to receive a penalty notice for allegedly failing to stop at a red light. Police today said further charges may be laid and are calling for witnesses to come forward. They believe about 30 cyclists may have been stationary at the pedestrian lights at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, the Amy Gillett Foundation said the tragedy highlighted the need for cyclists to obey road rules.

“We are saddened to hear this news,” the foundation’s general manager Melinda Jacobsen said. “It should serve as a timely reminder to cyclists to ride responsibly.” The foundation was established this year in memory of cyclist Amy Gillett, who was killed during a road training exercise in Germany in 2005.
