Melb: CycleSport Victoria Statement regarding Beach Road accident

CycleSport Victoria Statement regarding Beach Road accident - 31 August, 2006
The Board and staff of CycleSport Victoria are saddened to hear of the tragic death of James Gould, a pedestrian who was hit by a cyclist over the weekend. It is alleged that the cyclist failed to stop at a red light and subsequently collided with Mr Gould at a pedestrian crossing on Beach Road in Mentone.CycleSport Victoria encourages safe and responsible cycling and condemns the poor behaviour of any road user. CSV would remind people that this represents the minority of cyclists but as is the case anywhere in society the majority is often tarnished by the minority.

We encourage the shared use of Beach Road, which represents a great asset to many cyclists and an excellent method of encouraging people to exercise more regularly. CSV endorses the St Kilda Cycling Club’s ride of respect to be conducted tomorrow in respect to Mr Gould, his family and friends.

As a survivor of a bicyce run down, I wish to express sadness at the loss of a fellow pedestrian. The difficulty with bikes is they are silent, quick and small, and on a crowded street are yet another person. The cyclist who hit me abused me for being in his way despite my laying face down on the road.
Please cyclists, ride slowly around pedestrians, follow all road rules, especially indicate if you are turning a corner, cars have to, so do you!
