Sydney: Manly Daily attacks cyclists

From Michael McGrath, Community Representative Manly Bicycle Committee - 23 October, 2006

Saturday’s Manly Daily, a Murdoch empire newspaper, has joined with local Liberal party scaremongers to attack cyclists in the Manly area. This is part of a concerted campaign to discredit the independent council led by Mayor Peter Macdonald and the independent MP David Barr in the run up to the state election. Read the article here

Apparently cyclists have been weaving in and out of pedestrians, not wearing helmets and, according to Harold Scruby, this type of behaviour has been going on for decades and ’someone is going to get hurt’! What better advocate for the safety of cycling can you have? Would anyone who knows Harold Scruby please let him know we are not amused.

Also, if anyone has figures, stats or fact relating to the percentage of cycling casualties caused by ‘car door zone’ accidents can they please forward them to me. Email: accentATswiftdsl.com.au

We are have a dispute with council engineers who want to install a door zone bike lane on a steep downhill section of road, despite our objections and counter proposals.

All are encouraged to write to the Manly Daily at Manlydailyletters@cng.newsltd.com.au and also Letters to the Editor
