Russia gets tough on drunk cyclists

The Age: Russia gets tough on drunk cyclists - 22 November, 2006

Police chiefs in southern Russia said on Tuesday they want cyclists to pass a compulsory driving test after a spate of crashes involving drunken riders. “Accidents involving bicyclists most often happen because the driver of the cycle is in an inebriated state, or is holding the handlebar with only one hand,” Interfax news agency quoted Alexei Starovoitov of Krasnodar region police as saying.

Traffic police in the region, on Russia’s Black Sea coast, have asked local lawmakers to pass a by-law establishing the test for cyclists, the agency said.

Cyclists had been involved in 400 traffic accidents in the region this year, of which 60 resulted in deaths, said Starovoitov.
