From Port Phillip Council: New Weekend Clearway for Cyclists

A clearway for cyclists has been instated along Ormond Esplanade, Elwood between Glenhuntly Road and St Kilda Street, to operate on Saturdays and Sundays, from 6 – 10am. This is an addition to clearways which already exist during weekday peaks to benefit motorists.

Over the past two years, the council has been working with the neighbouring Cities of Bayside and Kingston, along with Victoria Police, VicRoads, Bicycle Victoria, local cyclists and the Sandringham Hospital on ways to make Beach Road route safer for cyclists, especially on weekend mornings when more than 5000 cyclists can travel along Beach Road – more than three times the number of cars and other vehicles. The signs along Ormond Esplanade have been changed but the clearway won’t be enforced until December. In the meantime, offending motorists will be issued with courtesy notices reminding them of the new rules.

While the clearway is operating, motorists will be able to park their cars in the foreshore parking lots and side streets.

The City of Port Phillip supports www.beachroadcyclist.com, a website where you can get all the best info on events, training and general news regarding on-road cycling throughout the state.

Hi all, this is a great start, and City of Port Phillip is to be congratulated for this pro-active work, work that brings safer walking, riding and driving conditons to Beach Rd and Esplanade within City of Port Phillip.
Currently City of Bayside is in Public Discussion stage and needs contributions from all riders living in City of Bayside to add weight to the new clearway declaration to complete the section from Elwood to Charman Rd, Beaumaris. Kingston City has deferred the discussion on this in seemingly in “protest” following the sad death of James Gould. This is, in my view, short sited as the quicker such a clearway is instigated the sooner blind spots and dangerous sight lines such as exist at the spot where the James Gould incident occurred. This is due to kerb side parking and side of road shoulder parking on the beach side of Beach Rd. Kingston Council needs strong letters of support to quickly implement a clearway for Beach Rd to bring safer conditions for Riders pedestrians and Drivers. if you live in Kingston City please write to the Council and your local member of State Prliament in support of the clearway being placed back on the agenda and resolved as a matter of urgency before further injuries or deaths occur within City of Kingston from dangerous road conditions that exist on Beach Road now.

Contact details are on WoJ links. Cheers and Ride Safe

    Rob
