Southland Times: Tour of Southland winner killed

Tragedy: Australian rider Scott Peoples winning stage four of the Tour of Southland last month. The 19-year-old has died after a collision on a Melbourne highway. 2006 Tour of Southland double stage winner Scott Peoples has died after being hit by a vehicle while training in Australia.

The 19-year-old is understood to have been riding on the Maroondah highway near Melbourne when he was reportedly struck from behind by a Nissan Patrol and later died at the scene. The male driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital suffering from shock. Peoples won stage four from Invercargill to Tuatapere and stage seven from Winton to Te Anau on the 50th anniversary tour last month riding for the Southland Times team. He finished 36th overall and was the 12th placed under 23 rider.
