2007 Australian Ride of Silence
Posted by admin on 02/12/07 in Ride of Silence
From US Ride of Silence: Join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph/20 kph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways.
Why does this site exist?
- To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
- To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
- To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
THE RIDE OF SILENCE™ WILL NOT BE QUIET
On May 16, 2007, at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence™ will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.
Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.
Please note: In Australia the Ride of Silence will be 10am – Saturday 19th May 2007.
Read here for reports of the 2006 Ride of Silence in Bendigo, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. This year we’re considering Beach Road for the Melbourne route, but all route suggestions are valuable. Also it would be great to get all Australian capital cities & regional centres represented. So spread the word, share your ideas and lets start planning towards the 2007 Australian Ride of Silence. If you would like to organise a Ride of Silence in your area, please feel free to contact us and also the RoS US organisers by March 1st 2007.
Message from Michael in Sydney: It’s that time of year again: time to start thinking about the annual Ride of Silence.
We had a good turnout in Sydney for the inaugural ride, but would like to make this a much bigger and better occasion this year. Not only do we celebrate and commemorate those who have lost their lives on our roads, but we make our point that the roads need to be safer for all users, including cyclists.
I would most warmly welcome anyone who is willing to offer their support to: map out and trial ride a route of 15 to 20kms from Hyde Park to Parliament House volunteer to act as a marshal help with promoting the event (press releases, letters to the editor, talking to radio, printing or distributing leaflets and posters etc}
The date for all Southern Hemisphere rides is Saturday 19 May. (Northern Hemisphere is on Wednesday 16, but they are in Spring, not Autumn).
Please contact me at: accentATswiftdslDOTcomDOTau or Ph: (02) 9949 6683 after hours.
cheers,
Michael,
