Adelaide Now: Hit-run cyclist ‘was over the limit’

An elite cyclist accused of the hit and run of another elite rider was allegedly driving with a blood alcohol reading almost twice the legal limit. Chris Chad Jongewaard, 27, of Para Hills, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court yesterday over an accident on February 10 that left rider Matthew Rex, 22, in a coma. Jongewaard is accused of driving with a blood alcohol reading of .094 at the time of the crash on Main South Rd at Normanville. He is charged with aggravated causing harm by dangerous driving, leaving an accident scene after causing harm and aggravated driving without due care.

Jongewaard is not charged with drink-driving but the allegations of drink-driving are in court documents relating to the other driving charges. Rex is in the Flinders Medical Centre in a stable condition. Jongewaard had his bail conditions altered yesterday to allow him to take up cycling commitments overseas.
