IBN News: Driver couldn’t do much to avoid cyclists: report

Witnesses to a cycling race crash in Canberra on Sunday say the person behind the wheel of the four wheel drive involved probably could not have avoided the accident. In a posting to Canberra blog The RiotAct, the witnesses said the crash on Cotter Road in Stromlo was triggered by the clipping of competitors’ wheels by other riders.

“Apparently a couple of the cyclists in the bunch touched wheels, causing them to fall and inevitably bringing down the rest of group… Some of the group fell into the path of an oncoming vehicle,” the cycling community sources, described as ’snouts in the cycling community’ said.

“Without preempting any investigation, it is understood there was little the driver would have been able to do in the conditions.”

ACT Police confirmed the critically injured woman had collided with another cyclist before being struck by an oncoming vehicle during the race.

The 34 year old from Kensington in Sydney remains in a critical condition in Canberra Hospital.
