In response to the April 26 letter, “Dangerous To Bike To Work in D.M.”: We live in a country beset by obesity and held hostage by oil imports. We drive over what used to be farmland on new (or expanded) roads financed by deficit spending, and we worry about global warming. Yet the answer to these problems probably sits, dust-covered, in our garage.

As an off-again, on-again bicycle commuter, I look forward to the fifth annual Bike To Work Week. Join me the week of May 14, when I will leave my gas-hogging, polluting SUV in the garage, heave my out-of-shape body onto my newly dusted bicycle, strap on my helmet and ride off to work. If you can’t ride that week, then please smile and wave at those who do.
