Whas11.com: Making the city safer for cyclists

State and city officials met Monday afternoon to discuss way to make the Second Street Bridge safer. Also at the meeting was the brother in law of Chips Cronen. Cronen was the experienced cyclist who was struck and killed earlier this month on the Second Street Bridge. His death came just two days before his brother in law was to have met with the mayor’s office to discuss special signage that would have alerted motorists that bicycles are on the roadway. The day that Chips Cronen was killed riding across the bridge, many people asked why a cyclist was even riding on it in the first place. The fact is that it is the only way to travel between Kentucky and Indiana within forty miles.

Also, bicycles are considered vehicles by law. They are allowed on any road unless otherwise posted, and they are not allowed up on sidewalks. The city will soon begin adding shared lane markings to city streets. These will make motorists aware that they should be on the lookout for cyclists. Because the Second Street Bridge is owned by the state, Kentucky highway officials had to be consulted before these signs can be added.
