Herald Sun: Ex-state cricketer jailed on cyclist hit-run death

Former Victorian state cricketer David Plumpton has been sentenced to 18 months jail over the hit and run death of a cyclist in Melbourne two years ago. The Victorian County Court was today told Plumpton fled the scene after he hit cyclist Matthew Cole, 32, in Plenty Road, Bundoora, in Melbourne’s north, on January 22, 2005. Mr Cole, who was riding two abreast with a friend, died at the scene.

The court was told Plumpton, from Pascoe Vale South, dumped his car in a park 6km from the accident site, but later turned himself into police. County court judge Edward Campbell sentenced Plumpton, 30, to 18 months jail with a minimum of nine months, fined him $300 and suspended his licence for two years. Plumpton played two one-day games for Victoria in the 2002-2003 season.

I am disgusted at the sentence. And how has Plumpton suffered, apart from getting a virtual slap on the wrist by the Judge – he continued to play cricket and was rewarded by the Jika Cricket Association being handed a medal for Player of the Year and named in the Side of the Year.
Glen Wheatley got more Jail time than this murderer!
