US: Show respect for bicyclists

Lacrosse Tribune.com: Letter - Show respect for bicyclists

I often commute throughout the Coulee Region on my bicycle, and I am appalled at the lack of respect sometimes shown toward cyclists. In the past month, I have nearly been hit several times, been rudely honked at and had obscenities shouted at me for riding on the road.
There is a terrible absence of bike lanes and often even shoulders. It is generally illegal to ride on the sidewalk, and some rims (and pedestrians) are more easily damaged on the sidewalk. It is a shame we cannot do more to acknowledge and accommodate alternative forms of transportation. What does this say about us as a society?
