WBNG: Thater Memorial Races Kick Off
Races get underway for the 24th annual Chris Thater Memorial. Some people took to the shade to watch, while many others braved the heat and lined the streets of Binghamton. Here, fans enjoyed some of the older riders, who competed in a masters event. Chris Thater was an avid cyclist who was killed by a drunk driver. The race was started to promote drunk driving awareness.
It gives people a chance to watch pro racing, and much more. “We have climbing walls, we have stunt mountain biking. We have all these activities, so you can watch the race for a little while participate in some of the activities, come back and watch the race. Wherever you turn there is something going on for somebody,” said Broome County Stop-DWI Coordinator Jim May.
The Thater Memorial 5-K Run begins tomorrow morning at 9:30. Professional bike races follow the run. They’re set to begin at noon.
