About the Vicki Porter Awareness Ride
33 year-old Vicki Porter, originally from Mackay and Bowen, a keen triathlete and all-round cyclist, has had her life abruptly and dramatically altered in a horrific hit and run accident at approximately 5:20am Friday 6th July, rendering her unable to feel from the waist down. She is in a spinal unit in Brisbane, in good spirits, and currently undertaking an aggressive rehabilitation program. Unfortunately, due to her rigorous schedule, she will not be able to make it home for the ride. However, she has got her sights firmly set on the “Vicki Porter Awareness Ride” 2008.
Vicki is extremely appreciative of all the efforts that are going into making this ride a huge success. Her ongoing sentiment is that she doesn’t wish to see what has happened to her happen to anyone else. So lets get behind Vicki and voice our rights on the road loudly and clearly in our numbers!!
Townsville cyclists are joining together to support Vicki and to remind everyone that we need to share the road and respect each other!
Aims of the Vicki Porter Awareness Ride, why this is the most important cycling event in Townsville’s History
- Raise community awareness about cycling safety in Townsville City - first mass ride in Townsville ever
- Raise money to assist Vicki overcome the burdens this sudden crime has placed on her and her family
The ride will be a safe, slow and fully police escorted journey from Dean Street sound shell to the Riverway Amphitheatre. Riders may join the ride at designated mustering points only. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Kirwan High (mustering point 3) is the recommended starting point for children under 10 yrs.
The ride will be followed by a rally and sausage sizzle at the Riverway.A registration fee of $5.00 will go to the fund to assist Vicki in her recovery. Register by dropping off this flyer with payment to Anaconda, Bicycle Centre, Off/On Bikes (formerly Tony’s), Top Brand Cycles or the Games Exchange.
