Billings Gazette - Letter: City would do well to encourage bicycle use
I write in response to the “Lewis bike lanes run into resistance” article in the Sept. 29 Gazette. First of all, as a resident, I am excited to see Billings’ citizens get involved and influence community decisions. We can all learn something from those who’ve stepped up, and I appreciate their concerns. Second, as a bicycle enthusiast, I am a strong supporter of a safe and well-planned bike environment.
I have written past letters promoting the need for bike lanes. “I don’t think anybody’s actually against the bike path,” The Gazette quoted. With this project, we have an excellent opportunity to add to the value, aesthetics and overall health of our community. Personally, I would like to see a well-thought-out design with safety, parking and overall experience in mind. A true bicycle network is one that can be used by a child.
This is a great opportunity to explore different types of bike lanes. In London, for example, the city created 10 or so bike lane options before implementation. Perhaps we could flip the new lane and the parked-car location to create a buffer? Raise the lane a little? Maybe paint the lane red - or simulate a greenway? The point is, let’s take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. If we get the bikes out, we get the people out. Where cars separate us, bikes bring us together and help create a friendly and healthy society. Jeff Butts, Billings
