Illawarra Mercury: Fatality adds to bend’s grim history
Saturday’s death of a cyclist at Bald Hill was one of 30 accidents on the notorious stretch since 2002, RTA figures revealed yesterday. On Saturday, Warilla man Michael Healey, 49, died after he fell into a 3m wide concrete stormwater drain. According to police, Mr Healey lost control of his bicycle, hit an Armco rail and was catapulted into a nearby scrubland, coming to rest in an open stormwater hole.
The accident was the second fatality along the stretch between Chellow Dene Ave and Lady Wakehurst Dr and one of nine accidents causing injuries in the past five years. The RTA only records crashes where at least one person is killed or injured or in which at least one motor vehicle has to be towed.
