US: Cyclist’s funeral - A last ride, among friends

The State: Cyclist’s funeral - A last ride, among friends

The pack of cyclists in brightly colored jerseys pedaling down Trenholm Road stopped at the peak of the hill, waiting for their friend to join them for one last ride. The hearse pulled out onto the five-lane road and the unusual procession continued the final quarter-mile to Tom Hoskins’ funeral at North Trenholm Baptist Church. The Columbia cycling community wanted to show its love for one of its most dedicated riders, a man who drew hundreds to the sport and raised thousands of dollars on charity rides.

Hoskins, 49, and Lee Anne Barry, 43, of Waxhaw, N.C., died Sunday in a Lancaster County collision during a ride to raise awareness about brain injuries.

During eulogies Thursday, Hoskins was remembered for his passions — family, church and cycling — and his full-tilt approach to life.

Lee Anne Barry’s husband, Ben, and 15-year-old son, Christian, led the cycling procession to Hoskins’ funeral. Ben Barry gathered about 50 cyclists around him for a prayer before they started.

“Remember Tom and what he was riding for,” he said.
