The Mercury: Guilty verdict on cycle crash

Further articles about Kate Tamayo

A 64-year-old man who hit and killed a cyclist on the East Derwent Highway last year has been found guilty of causing her death by negligent driving. Edward James Alderton, of Bagdad, struck Kate Tamayo, 42, with his Toyota Landcruiser as she was cycling at Old Beach on June 25 last year. Magistrate Sam Mollard found today that Alderton did not give the keen sportswoman and road safety advocate enough space as he went to pass her.

He said there was no doubt it was negligent to drive a car within a metre of a rider on a rural or semi-rural road.

He bailed Alderton to reappear for sentencing in the Hobart Magistrates Court on November 20.

The magistrate indicated he would impose a jail term but said the question would be whether to suspend it.

Hopefully not another suspended sentence for this criminal, Kate didn’t get a second chance either, lock him up as he drove an unroadworthy vehicle and didn’t care about other road users.
