Melb: Police target cyclists on Southbank Promenade

Herald Sun: Police target cyclists on Southbank Promenade

Cyclists planning a quick spin by the Yarra today could be in for a shock, with Victoria Police planning to crack down on those pedalling too quickly. Cyclists speeding along the Southbank Promenade will be targeted in a bid to “create a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists alike”. As part of Community Safety Month, police will patrol the area from 4-7pm to encourage cyclists to travel at a responsible speed and be mindful of pedestrians sharing the pathway.

Superintendent Stephen Leane said it is important for cyclists to be mindful of pedestrians and warned that unsafe behaviour will not be tolerated.

“Cyclists travelling at high speeds and approaching persons from behind without warning can startle people, leading to collisions causing serious injury,” said Superintendent Leane.

“Now that daylight saving has begun, the Southbank Promenade will become increasingly popular and it is vital for cyclists to adopt a responsible attitude when sharing the pathway with pedestrians.

“While only a minority of cyclists travel at unsafe speeds, the chance of a collision occurring when a cyclist weaves through pedestrians is extremely high and can have catastrophic results.”

A radar gun will be used to monitor speeds and police will consider issuing on-the-spot fines in the future if cyclist behaviour does not improve.
