US: Cyclists ride in honor of Brett Jarolimek

KATU.com: Cyclists ride in honor of Brett Jarolimek

Portland-area cyclists gathered together Monday evening for a memorial ride to honor a 31-year-old man killed a week ago in a collision with a garbage truck. Last Monday, Brett Jarolimek was riding in a bike lane when a garbage truck turned across his path. Jarolimek slammed into the truck and ended up underneath the rear wheels.

The garbage truck driver told police he checked his mirrors, did not see anyone and then signaled before turning right at a slow speed. He was not cited. Before the ride, a public memorial service for Jarolimek was held at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.

“I think that both cyclists and drivers need to be more aware of each other and treat each other with mutual respect,” said cyclist Peter Zlatnik. “We’re all just trying to get to our destination in one piece, safely. I think we just have to respect each other.”
